The Nandos Experience

Being invited out for a meal is always daunting when you’re a coeliac as you never know whether they’ll be anything (bar chips and salad) that you can eat on their menu. So you can imagine my panic when I was asked along to my boyfriends works do – an evening game of bowling and a all expense paid meal at Nandos.

So you can imagine my surprise when I realised that Nandos DOES have some gluten free stuff and if you ask any of the members of staff, they’ll be happy to help and will tell you what’s gluten free and what’s not.

I ended up having a 1/4 leg of chicken in medium sauce (I’m a bit of a pansy when it comes to spices), chips and coleslaw.

[My glorious nandos]

[Me very chuffed about my gluten free nandos meal]

It was so nice to be able to have the same foods as everyone else and not feel like you’re the odd one out. However, there are some foods to look out for, which are not gluten free, which are:

  • Portuguese Rolls
  • Red pepper dip
  • Couscous salad
  • Caesar salad (both croutons and dressing contain gluten)
  • Pitta Bread
  • Kiddies Sesame Seed Buns
  • Vegetable Burger Patty
  • Nata
  • Coconut tart
  • Crunchy Lemon Pudding
  • Toffee Cheesecake
  • Chocolate Mousse
  • Croutons (in Caeser Salad)
  • PERi~PERi powder (on the PERi~PERi chips)
I collected these from a Nandos Facebook page, although they advise you to always double check before ordering any of their foods.

  4. Just sitting in A Nandos now which as a coeliac is scary but staff were helpful in providing a huge folder containing all of the gf stuff. Super sensitive since avoiding gluten so we shall see. Thanks for the helpful post though as until now have found eating out really tricky!

    1. Hey Paul! So glad to hear that the staff at Nandos we’re super healthy! Even though I’m becoming more confident in asking staff what dishes are gluten free, sometimes it still can be quite scary! Especially if you come across some who aren’t aware of it or are reluctant to ask the chef on your behalf (this has happened to me a few times!) And you’re welcome too. I’m so glad it helped you and helped the situation less scary 🙂
